March 17 – 21, 2014 Reading and English

All students will be working toward grade level TEKS according to their IEP’s.

Classes will begin a figurative language/ poetry unit.

Monday – Go over poetry terms and definitions. Students will read a collection of idioms and discuss the meanings.

Tuesday – Alliteration – Students will read several poems that use alliteration. They will write phrases focusing on repetition of beginning consonant sounds.

Wednesday – Rhyme – End rhyme – Students will read poems and  identify the rhyming words in the poems.

Thursday – rhyming patterns – students will analyze various poems for rhyming patterns.

Friday – Students will write a short poem using alliteration or end rhyme.

March 3-7, 2014

All students will be working toward grade level TEKS according to their IEPs.

 

Monday – 6th and 7th grade will be taking a reading benchmark.

Tuesday and Wednesday – Students will read The Hollow.  They will determine the lesson or theme of the story, how the setting influences the character, and generate a summary based on the lesson the character learned.

Feb. 18-21, 2014 **Monday is President’s Day – Off

Thursday – Details in the body of a paragraph – Green book pgs. 124-125

This week the students will be taking a writing benchmark. 7th grade will take the benchmark on two, half- days. 6th & 8th grade will have one, half-day of benchmarking. The tests days are still to be determined.

Introduce autobiography, discuss details required in writing an autobiography. Class will read together the autobiography, The Firefighter.

Tuesday

Students will begin their personal autobiography using a chart.

Students will read with  the teacher selected stories.

Jan. 6-10, 2014

Students will be working towards grade level TEKS according to their IEPs.

Students will begin a novel unit which will last for two weeks. The 6th & 7th grade will read Alistare Owl, the 8th grade will read The Giver.

6th & 7th grade – Genre – Fiction – Read/Listen to chapters 1-5, begin characterization chart, graph plot chart,and infer the mood through the use of figurative language.

8th grade – Genre – Science Fiction/Fantasy – Read/listen to chapters 1-11, Vocabulary and Concepts: theme, motif, symbols – Students will recognize the importance of memory, relationship between pain and pleasure, and the importance of the individual. Students will chart and explain the characters personality traits and development throughout the novel.
