(2) Reading/Vocabulary Development. Students understand new vocabulary and use it when reading and writing. Students are expected to:

(A) determine the meaning of grade-level academic English words derived from Latin, Greek, or other linguistic roots and affixes;

(B) use context (e.g., cause and effect or compare and contrast organizational text structures) to determine or clarify the meaning of unfamiliar or multiple meaning words;

(C) complete analogies that describe part to whole or whole to part (e.g., ink:pen as page: ____ or pen:ink as book: _____);

(D) explain the meaning of foreign words and phrases commonly used in written English (e.g., RSVP, que sera sera); and

(E) use a dictionary, a glossary, or a thesaurus (printed or electronic) to determine the meanings, syllabication, pronunciations, alternate word choices, and parts of speech of words.

All students will be working towards grade level TEKs according to their IEPs.

Monday – Students will write Plot vocabulary terms from the word wall. They will need to study the terms for Friday’s test. Notes will NOT be used on this test.

Review WWW What=2 How=2 chart

Students will read teacher selected stories. They will have all week to complete the story and answer the comprehension questions.

Tuesday – Students will begin write a story summary of Number the Stars using the format of the WWW What=2How=2.

Review Plot chart – practice placing the elements in the correct section

Wednesday – Read with teacher, make revisions and edits to  story summary, review vocabulary terms and Plot chart

Thursday – Write final copy of story summary, review vocabulary terms and plot chart

Friday – Vocabulary  and Plot chart test, story summary due.

 

 

April 21-25, 2014 *STAAR Testing 22nd and 23rd*

Tuesday – STAAR testing: 8th grade, Social Studies, 7th and 6th grade, Math

Wednesday – STAAR testing: 8th grade, Science, 7th and 6th grade, Reading

Thursday – Begin the novel Number the Stars -Intro to background, listen/read chapters 1&2

Friday – Listen/read chapters 3&4, begin filling out plot chart

Monday – Students will read aloud teacher selected stories and answer the comprehension questions.

Tuesday – Figurative language – Hyperbole – Students will read a Tall Tale and find examples of hyperbole.

Wednesday – Personification – Classes will read poems with the use of personification.

Thursday – Students will match figurative language terms. Test review.

Friday – poetry test

March 17 – 21, 2014 Reading and English

All students will be working toward grade level TEKS according to their IEP’s.

Classes will begin a figurative language/ poetry unit.

Monday – Go over poetry terms and definitions. Students will read a collection of idioms and discuss the meanings.

Tuesday – Alliteration – Students will read several poems that use alliteration. They will write phrases focusing on repetition of beginning consonant sounds.

Wednesday – Rhyme – End rhyme – Students will read poems and  identify the rhyming words in the poems.

Thursday – rhyming patterns – students will analyze various poems for rhyming patterns.

Friday – Students will write a short poem using alliteration or end rhyme.

Monday – 6th and 7th grade will be taking a reading benchmark.

Tuesday and Wednesday – Students will read The Hollow.  They will determine the lesson or theme of the story, how the setting influences the character, and generate a summary based on the lesson the character learned.
