1st and 2nd period

Monday

Students will create e-mail and sign into the moodle probe. 1st Period will take the 6th grade probe, 2nd Period will take the 7th grade probe.

Read and discuss chapters 8 & 9 of Alistare Owl.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Take reading benchmark.

Thursday

Finish reading Alistare Owl and take the final test. Students will use their notes.

Friday

We will go over the benchmark.

1st Period: Students will work toward 6th grade TEKS as outlined in their IEPs.

2nd Period: Students will work towards 7.2(b), 7.3(A), 7.6(B), 7.19(i)

 

3rd Period

Monday

We will read and discuss chapters 13 & 14 in Number the Stars.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Students will take a STARR reading benchmark. Students will read the passages, answer the questions, put the paragraph number(s) of their answers next to the question, and check their answers.

Thursday

Complete Number the Stars and read the Afterword to find out how Lois Lowry got her ideas for this historical fiction book.

We will review simile and metaphor. The students will select a character from the novel, assume the role of that character, and write a personal narrative of their involvement in assisting others, or of their own escape, from Denmark. Students will use the figurative language in their narrative.

Friday

As a class we will review the STARR reading benchmark that they took this week.

 

5th Period

Monday

Students will take the 8th grade reading probe in moodle.

Complete the section on Punctuation in Essential Skills

Read and discuss chapter 6 & 7 of The Call of the Wild.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Take a reading benchmark. Students will use  reading strategies to prove their answers.

Thursday

Watch 45 minutes of the movie The Call of the Wild. Students will analyze the movie to the novel using  a compare and contrasting chart.

Friday

Watch the rest of the movie The  Call of the Wild. Students will complete the compare/contrast chart,  Inference, and Conflict charts.

Students will work toward: 8.2(B), 8.6(A,B), 8.13(B,C)

Using  a plot chart ,  the student’s  will provide responses to the plot sections. I will demonstrate how to  record their responses onto the chart.

We will view several videos dealing with prejudice and inequality. We will read and discuss the Prejudice and Violence handout. Students will respond to the writing prompt: How  can I make a difference in the world that I live in?

We will begin the novel Alistar Owl.

Class will go over the vocabulary for chapters 1 – 4. Students will use a plot chart to assist with note taking as they read/listen to chapters 1 & 2.

Using a web, the class will examine the traits of the main character, George.

Class will write responses to open ended questions on chapters 1 & 2.

Monday

As a class we will read and discuss chapters 1 – 4 of the novel Number the Stars.

Students will do Number the Stars vocabulary chapters 1 – 3.

Tuesday

As a class we will review making inferences from their handout. Students will work with a partner to play the Bio-Logical Conclusions game. Students will find the matching pairs of cards with similar topics. They will reread the pairs of cardss and write a conclusion based upon the information.

Wednesday

We will review when to use periods in abbreviations. Together we will read the language book and do Review A from pages 563-565.

We will review when to use commas in a series and separate 2 or more adjectives that come before a noun. As a class read and discuss pages 566-568 from the language book. Students will independently do worksheet pages 239 & 240 Commas with Items in a Series.

Thursday

As a class read and discuss Number the Stars chapters 5 -7.

Students will do Number the Stars vocabulary chapters 5 – 7.

Friday

Working with a partner, students will answer chapter questions 1 – 7. As a class we will discuss the answers.

 

5th period

Monday

Spelling pre-test

Using a T chart, students will describe the characteristics of  “Old Buck” and “New Buck”.  The students will respond the the prompt, “What is the ‘law of club and fang’? How is Buck introduced to it?”

Answer questions to chapters 1 & 2. Grade and discuss answers.

 

Tuesday

Continue to listen/read to chapter 3. Use the plot chart to record notes on the chapter.

Wednesday

Using the Making Inferences  diagram, students will describe Buck’s relationship with each character or groups of characters. Then tell which of Buck’s character traits are revealed through each relationship.

Listen to chapter 4.

Thursday

Continue to read/listen to chapter 4

Class will examine internal and external conflicts within the character, Buck. Using the Conflict chart, one scene is identified. Students will describe the Conflict that occurs. Then describe the outcome, or result, of the conflict.

1/2 – 1/6/2012

Monday

Organize binders for novel notes. Sections will include: journal responses, vocabulary, chapter notes, and literature elements of setting, characters, theme(s), point of view, and conflicts.

I will introduce the author Theodore Taylor and introduce the novel The Cay. Pg. 10  Glenco Literature Study Guide

Introduce vocabulary. Students will work in pairs, look up the meanings of prejudice and discrimination, write 4 complete sentences describing definitions in their own words.

Teacher will show where Curacao is located using Google Earth.

Class will follow  along in the book, The Cay, to the book on CD, chapters 1-3. Students will answer story comprehension questions.

Students will record notes and work in their binders on story characters, changes in characters,  setting, point of view, conflicts, and theme each day during the course of the novel.

Tuesday

Journal prompt – How do people develop prejudice in the first place?

Teacher will hand out an active reading chart. The students will record the important details that they learn about Philip, Timothy, and the cay itself. Listen/read to chapters 7-9 of The Cay.

Answer comprehension questions on chapters 7-9.

Journal prompt- Based on what you know from earlier chapters and from your own experience, do you think that Phillip’s change in attitude toward Timothy is true to life or not? Discuss  your response with your group.

Thursday

Grammar – Elements of Lang. pg 566-68, Comma usage in dates and addresses. Use practice page 246.

Complete chapter questions and vocabulary lists in class. Review for The Cay chapters 1-9 test using notes and voc. lists.

Friday

Class will take a Comma review and chapters 1-9 review of The Cay. Student will grade reviews in class.

 

Periods 1, 2, and 5 will be studying a novel and follow the same format as the  above mentioned binder usage for  3rd period class. Journal writing to prompts will be recorded in their binders. 1st  and 2nd period will read the novel Alister Owl, 5th period will read The Call of the Wild, by Jack London. The classes will also cover the literature elements of characterization, setting, point of view, theme(s) ,plot development, and conflicts.

Grammar will cover comma usage of: items in a series, addresses, dates, and large numbers.

12/5-12/9/2011 Christmas Around the World

Last week the  students gathered and compiled information from the teacher selected internet sites. They organized the information using a sentence outline. This week’s focus will be writing the research paper, preparing visual aids with their group, and present a group report on their country. I will record the presentations and post it on my blog.

 

Monday

Students will write a draft of their research report utilizing the outline and compiled information from  internet sites.

Tuesday

Read and discuss “Revising for Focus and Coherence”, pg. 418-419, Write Source.

Read and discuss “Creating Works-Cited Page”, pg. 338.395, and 415, Write Source.

Students will revise and edit paper.

Wednesday

Homework: write final copy of paper. Research papers are due on Friday.

Read and discuss “Preparing Your Presentation” ,pg. 436-437, Write Source.

Students will prepare visual aids with their group. Groups will practice presentations.

11/28-12/2/2011

The class semester project will be a comparing and contrasting of Christmas celebrations from around the world. The  teacher will provide internet sites focusing on five countries. The students will work in groups gathering data on their country’s historically based celebration of Christmas. The culminating activity will be a group presentation  on the assigned country. The teacher will record the students presentation and post on a class blog.

Monday

Teacher will introduce the semester project, assign groups, explain group goals, and individual jobs .The class will read on the topic of outlines found in The Writer Source text and construct a blank outline.

Teacher will explain and provide on an index card a model of the  required Internet bibliography format. Students will record the site information following this format.

Class will go to the computer lab and  individually collect data  on  their country.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Groups will meet to clarify research questions and define needs. The class will continue with their research gathering.

Thursday and Friday

Groups will evaluate and determine relevant  information obtained from researching topics. The group will combine info. and  compose a rough outline draft of the groups presentation.

Students will continue working on IEP goals and follow the above lesson plans with modifications on TEKS.

Students will generate a Gratitude List. From the list, they will  compose a poem using poetic techniques and figurative language.

Students will understand the author’s use of literary techniques to create characterization and suggest mood in a story.

Students will recognize idioms and explain the  author’s meaning.
