Tuesday – STAAR testing: 8th grade, Social Studies, 7th and 6th grade, Math
Wednesday – STAAR testing: 8th grade, Science, 7th and 6th grade, Reading
Thursday – Begin the novel Number the Stars -Intro to background, listen/read chapters 1&2
Friday – Listen/read chapters 3&4, begin filling out plot chart
Monday – Students will watch the first half of the movie, Holes. The students will take notes onto a venn diagram to compare and contrast the novel to the movie.
Tuesday – Students will watch the second half of the movie, Holes. The students will take notes onto a venn diagram to compare and contrast the novel to the movie.
Wednesday – Early release day. Class time will be adjusted for the shorter day. The class will analyze the elements of plot onto a plot graph.
Thursday – Class will work together to complete a Cause and Effect T-chart, citing examples from the novel.
Friday – Discuss and define Flashback. Class will cite examples of flashbacks used in the movie/novel, explaining the reasons why the author used the technique.

Reading
All classes will begin the novel, The Cay, by Theodore Taylor. All classes will record notes on the story characters, setting, point of view, conflicts, theme, and events during the course of the novel onto a graphic organizer.
Monday
I will introduce the novel and the vocabulary prejudice and discrimination. The students will look up the meanings in a dictionary and write the meaning into their own words. Students will listen to chapters 1-3. Students will chart plot elements onto graphic organizer.
Tuesday
Listen to chapters 4-6. students will chart plot elements onto graphic organizer. Students will answer questions to chapters 1-6.
Wednesday – Early Release Day
Listen to chapters 7-9. Chart plot elements, and answer questions to the chapters.
Thursday
Listen to chapters 10-13, chart plot elements, and answer questions.

The students will record the important details that they have learned about Philip and Timothy using the active reading chart.

We will finish the Figurative Language study will the last two devices of Rhyme and Metaphor.

6th grade – The students will be working on their Social Studies project of comparing the ancient civilizations of the Mayas, Incas, and Aztecs. They will select and compile information from the Internet and printed sources. They will type the information onto their blog pages.
7th Grade – The students will begin an expository paper on an environmental issue. The students have selected their topic and will select and compile information from the internet and printed sources. They will type the information onto their blog pages. Students will chose the format of final product: report with poster, report with drawing, slide show, or power point presentation.
8th Grade – same as 7th grade assignment.
The classes will begin working on the semester project of Christmas Around the World. I will provide internet sites focusing on five countries. The students this week will gather data from the internet, organize their data using an outline, begin writing their rough draft. I expect to spend about a week and a half on the project. The culminating activity will be a presentation of their report using a visual aide.
