9/30-10/4, 2013 Reading and English

This week 6th,7th,and 8th grade classes will be taking the Reading and English Universal Screener. The measurement tool will be the BRIDGE. I have planned to utilize 4 days to complete the two screeners.  There will also be a 6 week test covering Prefixes, Suffixes, and past tense verbs. I will have a review on Monday and Tuesday. The test will be on Thursday.

April 29 – May 3, 2013 Reading and English

Students will be working towards  grade level TEKS according to their IEPs.

Reading – Classes a studying a novel. 6th grade – Old Yeller, 7th & 8th grade – Tuck Everlasting

Each day the class will read/listen to 3-4 chapters, followed by discussion of plot elements and complete chapter  plot chart.

I will show the movie parts that relate to the chapters read in class.

English – Verb tenses

Please be aware that the posting of your child(s) grades will vary according to the subject area ranging from three (3) days to two (2) weeks determined by the complexity of the assignments. Minor assignments:  1-3 days; Major assignments:  3-5 days; Major writing assignments, major projects:   10 days.  Please check your child’s teacher website for additional information.

April 22-26, 2013 *STAAR Testing 4/23 & 4/24*

 Reading

Monday – Class will read a passage together and answer the comprehension questions using “bag ‘n’ tag” strategy.

English – Spelling past tense verbs

Tuesday – Math STAAR Test  till 1:00 ish.  Afternoon classes: verb forms of be and have. Green English book, pgs. 158-159.

Wednesday – Reading STAAR Test till 1:00ish. Afternoon classes: verb phrases with could, should, would, and must. Green book pgs. 166-167.

Thursday – Classes will begin a novel. Students will be studying  the Elements of Plot.

March 4-8, 2013 Reading and English

Monday

Students will add definition of Character and Characterization to Lit. of Elements book

Read/Listen to The Cay

6th grade – Students will draw or give written description of one of the main characters from The Cay.

7th and 8th grade – Student will write a descriptive paragraph about one of the main characters from The Cay.

English

6th – complete character description

7th- write concluding paragraph for slide presentation

8th- finish gathering research for slide presentation, begin writing concluding paragraph

Students  will write a daily journal entry based on Philip or Timothy’s first person point of view of living on the cay.

7th grade will meet in the Computer Lab at 2:00 to learn how to post their slide presentation on their blog.

Friday

Complete The Cay

If all classes are finished with the novel they will have a test  on The Cay, then write an alternative ending to The Cay.

 

 

Feb. 25 – March 1, 2013

Students will be working towards their grade level TEKS according to their IEPs.

Reading

All classes will begin the novel, The Cay, by Theodore Taylor.  All classes will record notes on the story characters, setting, point of view, conflicts,  theme, and events during the course of the novel onto a graphic organizer.

Monday

I will introduce the novel and the vocabulary prejudice and discrimination. The students will look up the meanings in a dictionary and write the meaning into their own words. Students will listen to chapters 1-3.  Students will chart plot elements onto graphic organizer.

Tuesday

Listen to chapters 4-6. students will chart plot elements onto graphic organizer. Students will answer questions to chapters 1-6.

Wednesday – Early Release Day
Listen to chapters 7-9. Chart plot elements, and answer questions to the chapters.

Thursday

Listen to chapters 10-13, chart plot elements, and answer questions.

Friday

The students will record the important details that they have learned about Philip and Timothy using the active reading chart.

English

Monday

Students will gather research data to support their position on the persuasive paragraph.

Tuesday

Students will begin typing their slide presentation.

Thursday

October 29-Nov.2, 2012 Reading

All classes will have reading passages according to their reading level. The students will read their grade level texts with fluency and comprehension, determine the meaning of new words, and summarize the elements of plot.

Monday

6th grade –View the movie: Charlotte’s Web

7th grade –View the movie: The Dollhouse Murders

8th grade – complete the last two chapters of The Doll house Murders, take the final review.

Tuesday

Using a Venn diagram, the students will differentiate between the portrayal of a novel character and how they are depicted in the movie.

8th grade – view the movie The Dollhouse Murders.

Wednesday – Thursday

Read aloud teacher selected stories and answer comprehension questions.

8th grd will complete the movie and Venn diagram.

Oct. 22-26, 2012 Reading

6th Grade- Reading

This week:

Students will read/listen to chapters 12-22 of Charlotte’s Web. Students will complete a character analysis of Charlotte using a graphic organizer, complete a plot graph over each chapter, and answer comprehension questions.

7th & 8th Grade-Reading

This week:

Students will read/listen to chapters 11-19 of The Dollhouse Murders. Students will complete a character analysis, explain the internal and external conflicts with the characters Amy, Aunt Clare, and Louann, complete a plot graph over each chapter, and answer comprehension questions.

Oct. 8 – 12, 2012 Reading and Writing

All classes will continue reading with the  teacher selected readings and answer the comprehension questions at the end of the stories.

This week classes will begin studying a novel. The focus will on understanding the elements of plot and character development.

6th Grade – Charlotte’s Web

This week the students will listen/read to chapters 1-5.

Using a graphic organizer, the students will organize the elements and structure of plot.

Students will draw evidence of character development onto a “web” and write/draw their response.

7th Grade – The Dollhouse Mystery

This week the students will read/listen to chapters 1-5.

Introduce  Mystery vocabulary and discuss points of view, 1st and 3rd person.

Using a graphic organizer, the students will organize the elements and structure of plot.

Students will draw evidence of character development onto a “web”  and write  a response describing a conflict between two characters.

English- Pronouns – 1st and 3rd person

 

Oct. 1-5, 2012 Reading

All classes will have reading passages according to their reading level. The students will be reading on their grade-level text with fluency and comprehension, determining the meanings of new words, summarizing the elements of plot, and different points of view.

Sixth grade will be given one story from the released 6th grade modified TAKS.

Sept. 24-28, 2012 Reading

  • Spelling pretest
  • Students will write their spelling words on index cards. Using the index cards, the students will alphabetize their words and write them in a list.
  • Students will read a teacher selected story and answer the comprehension questions.
  • Students will use a graphic organizer to sequence their story. They may draw pictures or write the response.
  • Students will identify the story elements by  writing their responses onto  the “story paddles”.
